In the study of the Russian avant-garde over the past century, generations of researchers have done a colossal work. Now we can say that there are practically no white spots left on its map. Being a phenomenon of a tectonic nature the avant-garde manifested itself in all spheres of culture and art and proved to be a part of the global changes in the social and political history of the twentieth century.

“Great Utopia” – this is how a large-scale international project was called at one time, which made it possible to realize the stereophonic nature of this phenomenon. This conference is an opportunity to look back, take stock and evaluate the tremendous scope of work accomplished by generations of researchers and, at the same time, forge new research paths and innovative approaches.

The desire for the synthesis of various arts, art and life, as well as the uncooled transgressive spirit of the avant-garde movement itself – all this is still alive, relevant and in demand. The conference is an opportunity to go beyond the beaten paths of research, to find new innovative approaches, new look. Its interdisciplinary nature will promote the mutual exchange of ideas and turn to the methods used in various branches of humanitarian knowledge: philosophy, sociology, history, linguistics.

The discovery of the avant-garde after a period of its oblivion, and a surge of interest in it in the 1960s and at the turn of 1980-90, coincided with eras of hope and a thirst for renewal associated with global changes in political and social life. Now, after several decades, those impulses that came from the avant-garde and were in tune with the time are not so tangible, and this creates the possibility of a clearer and unbiased approach, taking into account the new interests and challenges of our time, allowing us to update aspects and meanings.
