History has long ceased to be the preserve of academic scholars, having turned into one of the most powerful weapons in the battles of politicians. Destroyed monuments, rewritten textbooks, new street names – we have seen this more than once and, it seems, will destined to see repetitions in the future. Different interpretations of world history came to serve political managers, but at this moment they collided with the will of the popular masses.

Professor of the European University at  St. Petersburg Ivan Kurilla shows with specific examples how the past is changing and which social and political forces require those changes; and also tells how our appeal to history and its new interpretation influence many countries’ foreign and domestic policies. The book will interest all those who want to navigate contemporary historical debates in the world, especially in Russia.

On December 8 at 7 pm, historian Ivan Kurilla will present his book “The Battle for the Past: How Politics Changes History.” The political scientist and director of the “Oracle” publishing house Ruben Ishkhanyan will conduct the meeting. The event will occur at the Common Ground bookstore cafe (6 Baghramyan Sr.).
