The Reading Circle is on the road! We are meeting on November 15, at 7 pm at the A1 Art Space cafe (Abovyan 1/1).

Hereโ€™s a message from the moderator of the Circle – Asya Kramer.

โ€œWhat do we think when we hear the word โ€œLiberalismโ€? Please, hold that thought, Iโ€™ll ask that during the reading circle; and what do we think about when we hear “Republicanism”? Apart from association with a political party in the US, I reckon, not much. Why does everyone talk about โ€œliberalismโ€ and โ€œliberal valuesโ€ without thinking twice, but not many do so with โ€œrepublicanismโ€?

Republicanism originated in ancient Athens and Rome and thrived in medieval and Renaissance Europe. It has also offered a compelling political vocabulary for the revolutionary movements in France and America and resonated through the various anti-imperial, anti-monarchy, and anti-capitalist movements of the nineteenth century.

Why was it left behind? Was it absorbed by liberalism or did it just die out? I hope we will have fun discussing this, whether you think itโ€™s a relic of a bygone age or it just awaits its revival.

P. S. Sortition is more democratic than election, by the wayโ€.

To join our Reading Circle you need to speak English to at least B Level and have a general interest in the topic.

Don’t forget to register in advance, and bring your friends!
As always, the participation price is just an order from the bar/kitchen of the venue.
