Studying photography in the humanities: methods and approaches
Maria Gurieva
Associate professor at the International School of Arts and Cultural Heritage,
European University at St. Petersburg
Photography is a phenomenon that has been problematic for researchers, every time in a new way, for the whole period of its existence. How does one combine its different functions and forms – whether art, popular practices, propaganda, or affective labour of a loved one’s photograph? The lecture will be dedicated to the methods and approaches that are used in the humanities for the study of photography, with special regard to the specificity of the medium.
Maria Gourieva (PhD) is a researcher and lecturer in photography studies and an associate professor at the International School of Arts and Cultural Heritage, European University at St Petersburg. Her academic interests lie in the social and cultural history of photographs, vernacular, private, and family photography, and the materiality of the photographic. She is a co-organizer of the After Post-Photography conference.
May 5 at 7:00 pm at 31/4 Charents str. Caucasus Institute building, 3rd floor
