From June 15 to 29, the Yerevan Center for International Education will host its inaugural international Summer School“Societies and Cultures Torn Apart: Conflict and Cohesion.” This event will bring together students from Eurasia and the West to foster communication during an unprecedented global crisis, focusing on the historical roots and current realities of conflicts.
The YCIE Summer School committee selected 20 participants from over 50 applicants worldwide. These students represent esteemed institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley; Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Brown University, European University at Saint-Petersburg, Cambridge University, Central European University (Vienna), Humboldt University, University of Bologna, University of Amsterdam and LUISS Guido Carli.
The disciplinary focus of the Summer School is the study of cultures, societies, and states in Eurasia, both in the current moment and in historical perspective. Distinguished speakers from various reputable universities and institutions will address imperialism and the post-colonial situation in Eurasia, in a global comparative framework of analysis; histories and legacies of empire and colonialism across former Soviet and socialist territories—including in Europe and Armenia; the demand for and challenges of disciplinary decolonization; the cultural history of interrelationships between Russia, Eurasian, and Western societies, past and present; and views of current conflicts and global tensions from uncommon vantage points.
