What Will the Course Give You?

The course focuses on data collection strategies on the Internet through scrapping and parsing. The online revolution in information exchange, social network revolution, and digitization of many spheres of people’s lives created almost unlimited pools of information and data available for collection and analysis. Data analysts, market research specialists, academic researchers and students, journalists, and investigators got access to a wide variety of opportunities to answer their questions through the analysis of publicly available data. The only issue is to collect relevant information in the most efficient way, turn it into data, and prepare it for analysis.

1

Basic knowledge of statistics

2

Basic knowledge of R and RStudio (tidyverse library, basic R functions)

3

Basic skills in scrapping and parsing techniques to further deepen your knowledge

4

Examples of code to apply in your own data analysis projects

1

Basic knowledge of Python (type of objects, functions, http requests, data transformation with pandas)

2

Basic skills in scrapping and parsing techniques to further deepen your knowledge

3

Examples of code to apply in your own data collection projects

4

Examples of code to apply in your own data analysis projects

Concept

The course is aimed at mastering basic professional skills by social and political science students. The course focuses on the logic and development of an empirical research program, the organization of research process, and the preparation and presentation of scientific texts of various academic genres. It is planned to conduct seminars and workshops at which students discuss course topics based on the material of their research projects, and also analyze the experience of conducting certain research projects by other scholars.

Course participants will submit short written responses on the course-related tasks, book reviews (about 1000-1500 words) and finally, drafting of research proposals related to their master’s or other projects.

Who For?

The course is oriented towards those coming from non-tech backgrounds: students and researchers from social sciences students and humanities, journalists, and public policy experts, who have not used programming and statistics in their practice before but would like to acquire new hard skills in data collection and data analysis.

1. Academic researchers and students
For those coming from social sciences and humanities

2. Public policy analysis experts
For those from think tanks and research organizations

3. Data journalists and independent investigators
For those collecting and analyzing open-source data

Program

Classes will be held twice a week on evenings in Zoom.
A detailed schedule will be published two months before the start of the course.

What is information, what is data, and how to automate the transformation of the former into the latter. Most typical forms of information/data available on the web (raw data – text and numbers in text, tables), types of websites.
More necessary Python basics. html tags and the structure of the site. http requests. Requests and BeautifulSoup libraries for scraping and parsing. Lists and the transformation of data into data frame.
Yet another part of Python basics. Extension – various methods to access html tags and their attributes. Tables as the most common format of infodata on the web, and how to approach the parsing of a table.

Feedback of Participants

I wanted to express my gratitude for the course and the opportunity for remote participation. It’s not for me to say how essential all the provided materials are in practice; they are simply a ‘must-have’ for any student or graduate of social and humanitarian faculties! During the course, I filled in many gaps in my knowledge, and the course program completely met my initial requests and expectations. I would also like to thank you separately for your detailed and insightful comments on homework assignments.

Kristina Harutyunyan

Thank you very much for the course! You and your team have done a great job setting up remote learning. The lack of real presence is hardly noticeable thanks to constant feedback during classes and insightful comments on homework scripts.

Oleg Lutohin

As a researcher working with data in the social sciences and humanities, I found it intriguing to acquaint myself with new data analysis and processing tools and to try applying them in my work. I came to the course unprepared, but this did not hinder my ability to study the material successfully and complete my homework. The constant help and support from the instructors were greatly beneficial throughout the learning process!
