Sergei Shtyrkov

Director, Anthropology program

Sergei Shtyrkov is a social anthropologist and a specialist in the anthropology of religion, ethnicity and nationalism. After graduating from the Department of History at St. Petersburg State University, he attended the doctoral programme at the Department of Anthropology at the European University in St. Petersburg, where he remained to teach after graduation. He defended his thesis at the Russian State University for the Humanities. In 2002-2022 he worked as a senior researcher in the Caucasus Department of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2022-2024 he is a research professor at the Groupe Sociétés, Religions, Laïcités, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Études – PSL, Paris, France.
