Everyone Shoots Well: What is Computational Photography?
Photography has been a field of art for a very long time. However, taking good images no longer requires professional equipment. Even many famous photographers travel without cameras, opting instead to shoot using their smartphones. Why? The answer is algorithms built straight into the phone’s camera. A field of expertise is emerging before our eyes that will allow us to significantly increase our shooting options.
In this lecture Oleg Lashmanov, scientific director of the Laboratory “Art and Artificial Intelligence” of the European University at St. Petersburg, will discuss how computational photography works and why ordinary people began to take such good images. Maria Guryeva, a specialist in the history and theory of photography, will discuss how contemporary phenomena such as phone photography, social media photo sharing, selfies, filters, and general visual literacy are interpreted.
